Korokoro o te Parata

Where it all started. Korokoro o te Parata – Humanity, Bringer of the End of Days explores the idea that humanity is the Antichrist and is bringing the End of Days.

Whose days though? The days we are talking about are manufactured, a construct of the human mind. Nature has no concept of our days on this earth and eventually takes it rightful place – on top. The idea of Angels and Demons from Mate Kanehe are reintroduced here as literal Angels and Demons and their interpretations through Maori myth, legend and cosmology.

Inspired by the likes of experimental film Koyaanisqatsi which is part of the Qatsi trilogy.

The titles of all three motion pictures are words from the Hopi language, in which the word qatsi translates to “life and the word Koyaanisqatsi means “unbalanced life”. I started to think of names for my project that included many indigenous tie-ins from around the world but ultimately that lead me to exploring my ancestry and the name Korokoro o te Parata which has become a Māori metaphor for ‘on the brink of disaster’.

In my research I came across a story pertaining to the voyage of the Arawa (one of the great wakas used in the migrations that settled Aotearoa) to Aotearoa. Essentially after a story involving kidnapping, love, lust and infidelity, priest Ngātoro-i-rangi was so furious when he found his wife had cheated while on the journey from Hawaiki. In his desire to gain revenge, raised a huge whirlpool in the sea named Te korokoro-o-te-Parata (“The throat of Te Parata”). The waka was about to be lost with all on board but Ngātoro-i-rangi eventually took pity and caused the seas to become calm again. This story of Te korokoro-o-te-Parata has since become a metaphor for ‘on the brink of disaster’.

Exploring the same themes as Coalmonster, this is a story of living in the anthropocene (a proposed geological epoch dating from the commencement of significant human impact on Earth’s geology and ecosystems, including, but not limited to, anthropogenic climate change) which eventually leads to downfall of all on the ‘waka’ that is Earth

This is the most advanced of the symphonies as I have done the most research for this.
