Colosseum of Broken Dreams

Lancaster Park, previously known as Jade Stadium and AMI Stadium, was a sports stadium in Waltham, a suburb of Christchurch in New Zealand. It had been the home of rugby and sport in Christchurch since the 1880s until 2011.

Following the earthquakes of 2010 and 2011, it was deemed unusable and subsequently demolished.

The land was originally gifted to the people of Christchurch specifically to be used as a sports ground, and this has been a contentious issue.  Before it was completely demolished, I decided I would take a series of photos, a few of which are included here.

Seeing it sitting there, isolated in ruins, made me think of Rome and the Colosseum. This type of decay (think post-Olympic sports venues) is creeping into many parts of the world, and ultimately, nothing changes, as we seem to be suffering the same fate as Rome did thousands of years ago.

There are a significant number of photos in the series that could be turned into publications or for exhibition.
